Here is an early season report for April. We have been seeing some good signs for this upcoming Summer season. This includes warmer water, lots of bait and a good showing of striped marlin. As a side note, the sardinas we've been seeing are HUGE. They actually look like small panfish. We haven't seen sardinas this big in many years. Good concentrations of striped marlin could be found from La Ribera to south of Los Frailes and about 10 miles offshore. The bite has been hit or miss with marlin actively feeding one day and lock-jawed the next. When they are on the chew it has been wide open with lure, live and dead bait being taken readily. Steve Jensen of Fountain Valley, California, landed and released 7 striped marlin on his birthday. We did have some stripers pushing a 170 lbs. A few dorado were also landed over the past week, but no real numbers yet. We did also see a few wahoo, which is another good sign for an early season this year. Inshore fishing has been very good with pargo, cabrilla and sierra actively feeding in front of Rancho Leonero.
