Hola Amigos,
Well it was another great week down here on the East Cape.
Based on the last three weeks, I am declaring Friday's to be "Tuna
Fridays". For the last three weeks we have seen hardly any tuna if at
all Saturday through Thursday. Then comes Friday and as if they know
what day of the week it is, Yellowfin Tuna
show up. Now I'll be honest and tell you that on Tuesday the cruiser
"El Tio" got into a nice tuna bite and came home with 14 Tuna, the
biggest weighing in at 132lbs. (see picture below). But it was not until
today that any other boat came in with tuna. Today we had 10 boats
return with some nice tuna on board. All were from football size to
70lbs. The tuna bite as been out about 25 miles from Pescadero. There
seems to be a trend forming here..."Tuna Friday"
The Dorado so seem to
care much about the days of the week. We are seeing boats coming back
with 6-8 nice size dorado each day. I'm talking about 35-50 pounders on a
consistent basis. The marlin bite seems to be making a turn around. It
seemed that for the last few weeks guys have been seeing lots of
billfish in the water, but they just haven't been hooking them. This
week we started to see boats coming in with multiple billfish flags
flying, were in previous weeks you might see 1 flag per boat. The
roosters are also being landed quite frequently by those who are fishing
inshore. Although the nice big roosters have been landed a few miles
off show and with bigger bait like Lady Fish and small jacks. The hot
spot seems to be from La Ribera down to Lighthouse point, then straight
out a few miles off shore.
I mentioned in last
weeks report that the Father, Sons and Friends annual tournament took
place over the weekend. The award ceremony was held on Saturday after I
submitted my report. I just wanted to let everyone know that the group
raised $5,000 that went to a boarding school in La Ribera. The group's
fishing totals were almost as impressive with a total of 15
Marlin (all released) and 125 Dorado with 10 being over 40 pounds and
the biggest one was 52 pounds, caught by Stan Gollinger. A big thank you
to everyone involved, especially Jack Richardson who organizes this
great event each year. That's all for this week amigos! Next week is the
KIR Fish and Chips tournament and bikini contest!
