East Cape Guides Report 6/26/11

From the watery desk of Mark Daugherty

This report is from Eddie Dalmau of Van Wormer Resorts.

Weather was a little windy following the storm Beatriz, but things have cleaned up considerably with fair weather forcasted for the next week. Water is on the cool side south of Punta Gorda, but water on the East Cape is a consistent 84 degrees with high levels of chlorophyll throughout the Sea of Cortez. Bait has been plentiful with very large sardinas. Fishing for Marlin and Dorado has been steady with a few large dorado over 50lbs. coming to the dock everyday. The tuna bite has been all about the school in the north near Cerralvo Island with runs up to 20 miles out. Some boats were rewarded with fish over 100lbs. The roosterfish bite has been EN FUEGO (ON FIRE) with 10-20 fish days in front of La Ribera and some larger roosters being landed off of the lighthouse. All in all, a very good start to the Summer season.
Josh, Cayo and Ramon with a nice 50lb. Dorado
Ebb and Captain Jesus with a 180lb. striped marlin...released

The Gentlemen Of Leisure (GOL Allstars) with a 300lb. blue marlin, sadly the fish expired during the fight

East Cape Report from Cass Tours June 19, 2011

by Cass Tours

Water- Very cold inside, especially from the Light house south, as low as 70, just five miles offshore the water warms up to 84 degrees! Midday Easterly winds..

Air- a little cooler this week, highs in the low 90's. Clear skies, slightly overcast mornings.

A more consistent bite than last week. Very good Bill fishing with lots of Striped Marlin being released. A much better Dorado week, with some really nice Bulls taken. Not many, but some big Yellowfin coming in, fish daily over 100#'s. Three Wahoo taken this week between 55 and 80#'s. very good inshore fishing. There is still huge quantities of bait everywhere, but the fish are biting much more consistently than last week. Midweek, cooler water moved inshore, outside there are huge temperature breaks, some ten degrees or more. Boats working the breaks are really banging the Stripers and Dorado. Inshore fishing was better early in the week, lots of Pompano, and Gallos.

Billfish- With the very warm water outside, Blue Marlin are showing early. The hotel fleet released a couple this week. Boats targeting billfish are releasing at least one a day, some up to five. The Striper fishing has been the best off Frailles on the temp breaks. Lures, live Caballito, Mackerel and Ballyhoo all working.

Dorado- Better fishing this week. Lots more around, both schooling and larger fish. Very spread, hanging in the warmer water outside. Any floating structure outside producing fish. The shark buoys off Pescadero have been holding some quality bulls. Live sardine, trolled marlin lures.

Yellowfin- A long run to the 88, and then normally a long wait, but Yellowfin over 100#'s are being taken daily. Sitting on the high spot, chumming Sardine and then baiting Caballito or mackerel is the only way they are being taken. They'll come to the surface for about ten minutes every two hours. A very good chance at a 100 plus # fish, but not guaranteed. Smaller tuna in th 15 to 40# range are being taken south, under Porpoise.

Wahoo- Every week the hotel fleet is taking two or three quality Wahoo to 80#'s. Mostly on Marauders and Rapalas. All three taken this week were from the lighthouse south..

Inshore- Very good early in the week. The cold green water that came up midweek, hurt the bite. Still lots of Pompano, decent Roosterfishing..

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 6/17/11

by Eddie Dalmau, Van Wormer Resorts

Fishing continued to be up and down again this week. We are still seeing some big tuna, although they were mostly landed earlier in the week. Early in the week the tuna bite was north by the ocho-ocho, where we say tuna from football size to 160lbs. Later in the week the tuna bite moved south to Los Frailes and we started to see much smaller tuna. The dorado bite is still very strong with guest finding dorado north and south all week long. The dorado have been in the 15-35lbs. range for most of the week. We are still seeing plenty of billfish in the area with striped marlin, sailfish and blue marlin coming in almost every day. This week we also saw roosters up to 35lbs., wahoo, grouper, skip jacks and pargo. The winds kicked up on Thursday and Friday from the south east which made fishing a little tough, but the forecast for this weekend shows that things will be calming down. Water temperatures have been ranging from 81-83 degrees this week with air temperatures in the upper 80’s to low 90’s in the day, then dropping down to the mid 70’s to low 80’s at night. That’s if for this week amigos! Should have some reports from the Keep’n It Reel tournament next week.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 6/10/11

by Eddie Dalmau, Van Wormer Resorts

Fishing continues to be very good down here in the East Cape. With more and more guests arriving and more boats going out each day, the fish counts are getting up to the numbers that we are use to. This week the tuna bite continued with yellowfins coming in from as small as 20lbs. to as big as 190lbs. Today on the dock I weighed a 57lb. and a 78lb. Yellowfin. We are also seeing plenty of dorado up to 45lbs, with the average size coming in at 25lbs. Marlin seemed to be the fish of choice this week, with two tournament groups going after billfish. A few boats landed 7-10 billfish in one day with the average boat coming in with 1-3 billfish. Wahoo are still around and we are seeing good numbers week to week. Today I saw two nice size wahoo that weighed in at 30lbs. and 38lbs. Punta Colorada guest Bud Goodman landed a 110lbs. tuna, 17 Dorado, 14 Amber Jack, 2 pargos and 2 roosters in his three days of fishing. Over at Playa Del Sol, the Dark of the Moon tournament reported on 10 Anglers fished a total of 15 Cruisers over 4 days, 13 Tuna, 22 Marlin, 1 Mako, 7 Dorado. The weather has been very warm down here with highs in the mid 90’s and lows in the upper 70’s all week long. Water temperatures have been in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.

That’s it for this week for the East Cape.

Hope to see you all down here soon.
