If ever there was a holy grail, John Petruescu has found it and it lived at Hurricane Bank. 445 pounds of monster yellowfin tuna, it left everyone on the EXCEL stunned! John used a BHPtackle.com 25-foot 200lb Momoi mono wind-on leader and a lot of skill to land this outstanding trophy fish of a lifetime, the largest yellowfin ever caught on rod and reel. Way to go John!  Read the report or listen to the Captain's report here...

114lb. Wahoo Caught off of Punta Pescadero

Just in from Eddie Dalmau of Van Wormer Resorts...

This giant 114lb. wahoo was landed today by the Borracho y Amigos (Captain Oscar Verdugo) out of Hotel Palmas De Cortez.  It the boat and Captain sound familiar it’s because it is the same boat that won the 2012 Dorado Shoot Out.  It truly is the year of the Borracho!

The wahoo was caught just north of Palmas De Cortez near El Cardinal and Punta Pescadero.  It was hooked on a ballyhoo which they were trolling looking for Dorado.  They actually hooked 4 wahoo, but this was the only one that did not bite himself off.

Gyotaku Fish Prints by Lyle Brunson

For those of you not familiar with Japanese Gyotaku fish prints, Gyotaku (Japanese, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing or rubbing, dating from the mid-19th century, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches. In order to make a gyotaku print, one places the subject (e.g. fish, crab, scallop shell) on a wooden bench and paints one side with sumi ink. Next a piece of paper or other material is laid over the ink-covered fish. Finally, one rubs the material until there is the image of the fish on it. Modern gyotaku artists often substitute acrylic or other painting material for the traditional sumi-e,

Here is a video on Okinawa Gyotaku fish prints:

Lyle Brunson takes Gyotaku prints to the next level with his expertise in large game fish prints like marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo and roosterfish. He designs each print to the customer's preferences. You can go with just black ink for that traditional look, a light wash of color for billfish or something more colorful for species like dorado (mahi mahi). I can attest to Lyles skill and attention to detail, as my clients have been overwhelmed by the quality, artistry and craftsmanship of his prints. One other benefit to a fish print is you can fold in up and put it in a suitcase for the trip home. When you get home you can mount your print by following Lyle's detailed mounting directions...done. No waiting for two months for that fiberglass mount. Lyle's work really speaks for itself and I highly recommend his work.

East Cape Guides Fishing Report 10/1/12

We had some crazy weather last week with tropical cyclone Norman pushing up into the Sea of Cortez on Wednesday. Rain storms were sporatic and considerable at times during the week. As the storm made landfall on the mainland on Friday, we had some of the largest waves I have ever seen hit the beaches of Buena Vista and Los Barriles. These were big shore break waves that looked more like Sandy's Beach or Makapu'u in Oahu, Hawaii than the East Cape. The system moved out on Saturday and it was back to sunshine and beautiful blue greasy calm water ranging from 85-88 degrees.  Fortunately, the 6th Annual Casting for Soles shoe/t-shirt give-a-way saw sunshine and blue skies. This was my first year volunteering for this event and it went smooth as silk with Eddie Dalmau managing crowd control and Jack McCulloch's team sizing and distributing shoes from New Balance and Clark's to more than 2000 locals in the East Cape. The giveaway also included shirts, hats and sandals from AFTCO and eyeglasses for those in need.

Fishing was a mixed bag of dorado and stripers/sails from La Ribera down to Los Frailes. There have been big schools of skipjack off of La Ribera and slow trolling skipjack strip baits has been the ticket for the dorado. We've also had some blue marlin following the skipjack schools. Also, boats ran out 30+ miles North and found wide open tuna up to 50#. It's been hit and miss on the tuna with a few 100+ tuna being landed on the dolphin pods offshore from Los Frailes. Inshore we are still seeing rooster to 30#, and some nice pargo.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 8/31/12

The week started out slow with not too many fish landed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but we finished very strong. Lots of tuna and dorado were caught by guests of Palmas De Cortez and Playa Del Sol the last three days. The great news is that the tuna have moved in closer and they are now only 5-10 miles south, southeast out from Palmas De Cortez. Most of the tuna were football size with a few reaching up to 35lbs. The dorado bite has improved quite a bit as well, with anglers landing dorado in the 30-50lb. range. The dorado have been to the south and north of the hotel, so it is pretty much wide open for tuna and dorado right now. With most anglers hitting the nearby tuna and dorado, not too many marlin have been landed. The El Tio landed a 150lb. striped marlin as it was coming into dock. The cruiser was inside the boat line, in between two boats that were anchored, when they spotted the fin. The hooked the fish and everyone on the dock watched as they fought the marlin for about 30 minutes. This was something you don't see every day. Anyway, that's it from down here on the East Cape. Don't forget about our September specials going on right now. Call 877-777-8862 for more details.

NEW Scentblazer Teasers

I met Jessica at the Fred Hall Sportfishing show in Long Beach, CA. She showed me the Scentblazer product line and I was immediately interested in their teaser design. I'm a big fan of large teasers and I think they raise fish, period. I was also very interested because over the past eight or ten years I had built similar teasers out of PVC pipe, mylar tape, vinyl skirts. Basically, fancy chum tubes for trolling. The Scentblazer teaser for fit and finish made my teasers look crude in comparison. Their teaser is your classic bowling pin shape but with a two piece, polycarbonate body with a hollow bait chamber and large open grate at the back of the teaser.

I rigged two of them up with about four feet of 650lb. Momoi Xhard leader and loaded them up with bait. The bait chamber worked perfectly with our local bullet and frigate tuna. You simply unscrew the head of the teaser, load your chum into the body and screw the two pieces together. We would remove the head (behind the pectoral fins) and tail, gut the bait, cut crosshatch slices in the body of the bait on both sides and insert into the teaser. The one detail I really liked about this teaser, unlike others on the market, was the fact that I could control the action of the teaser by adding or removing chum from the chamber. Less chum equaled more action. The teaser would buck, skitter on the surface and dive with a really erratic action with less chum. If it was packed down with bait, it would push lots of water throwing a huge smoke trail, head shake and still dig in even when the wind would come up in the afternoon. We've raised a couple blues on them this Summer but I think we are definitely going to raise some more this Fall.

Check them out at www.scentblazer.com.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 8/10/12

Hola Amigos,

It was an excellent week of fishing down here on the East Cape. You could really feel things open up this week. August is known for being a great month of fishing. You get the Dorado, Tuna, Stripe Marlin and Roosters that you normally get early in the season, then add to it Sails, Blues and Wahoo. That is exactly what we saw happen this week. After a couple of weeks of so so fishing, the tuna and Dorado bite turned on at the same time. Boats were landing 8-12 Yellowfin up to 80# and they were less than 15 miles out for most. The same could be said about the Dorado. Early in the week it seemed like the hot spot was north about 30 miles near the Ocho Ocho. This is where the El Tio landed their monster Blue Marlin weighing in at 505lbs. Most boats were fishing Tuna and Dorado in that area when the El Tio hooked their Blue.

Later in the week Mark Daugherty of East Cape Guides reported landing 6-10 Tuna and Dorado per boat right in front of Hotel Punta Colorada. Mark reported that he could really see things turning around this week and the fishing became wide open. He went on to report that there were big blues swimming with the schools of tuna, so anglers should be ready just incase one of these monsters hits their lure. We also saw an increase in the number of Wahoo landed and lost. Wahoo season generally starts in July and goes into November. The roosters were also out in big numbers. Most angers that targeted Roosters this week were rewarded with lots of opportunities ranging from 15-60lbs. Most of the strikes came from Lighthouse point to Cabo Riviera Marina. Some of the other species landed this week included Pargo, Bonita and Amber Jacks. That’s it for this week amigos. Check out the picture of the 200+ pound tuna landed on July 27th.

Sorry it’s so late, but I just had it emailed to me yesterday.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 7/13/2012

Hola Amigos,

It was quite a week in the East Cape. This was definitely the week for variety. Of course we saw the usual tuna and dorado bite, with lots of small to medium size fish hitting the dock. I should mention that there was a tuna over 200lbs. caught next door at Martin Verdugo"s. Most of the tuna I saw were from 10 to 40 pounds and the same could be said for the dorado.

But enough about dorado and tuna. This truly was a great week for variety.  We found out that the IGFA 20# line class record had been broken by Jack Kautz of Lodi, CA with a giant 101lb. rooster caught near the Lighthouse. Then Robert Dykes from Orange Park Acres, CA landed another monster rooster which could be 90-100lbs. while fishing with Chuy on the Rude Boy. Along with the giant rooster landed by Robert, Lucinda Dykes from Cottage Grove, OR and Curtis from Ladera Ranch, CA landed roosters estimated at 35, 45, 50, 70, 80 and 100 pounds all within an hour and a half in front of Lighthouse point. Then we saw a monster Amber Jack landed which was estimated at over 60lbs. The Rude Boy also came back with a small grouper which we had not seen too many of this summer. Then later in the week the Gene Duchene group landed the first big wahoo of the season estimated at 40lb. while fishing on the Whiskey.

The billfish numbers continued to climb with quite a few Striped Marlin landed as well as a few sails. We even saw a handful of blues landed this week, the biggest weighed approximately 340lbs.

So in recapping this weeks fishing we had Dorado up to 40lbs, Yellowfin Tuna over 200lbs., Roosters up to 100lbs., Amber Jacks up to 60lbs., Blue Marlin up to 340lbs., sailfish, striped marlin, grouper, cabrilla, bonita, and trigger fish. This truly is what makes this fishery so unique. Variety is the spice of life! Next Saturday July 21st will be the 8th Annual Dorado Shoot Out. Hope to see many of you next week.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 7/6/12

 Hola Amigos,

Once again I must start by apologizing for missing last weeks report. I actually got to go out and fish last Friday and did not have enough time to write my weekly report. In case you were wondering, I went out on the Deluxe Cruiser El Tio and we had an incredible day on the water. Started the day off with a 30 mile run south near Los Frailes. There we spotted a pod of spotted dolphin which were holding tuna. The first few passes were unsuccessful, but on our fourth pass through the school, every line in the water was screaming line. It was on in a big way. My friend and Owner of East Cape Guides Mark Daugherty was the first one to put a fish in the boat. It was a nice 25lb. Yellowfin landed on a cedar plug. I was the second one to put a fish on the boat and it was a 20lb. Yellowfin caught on a cedar plug. My brother in-law Dave Mills was the last of us to bring up his tuna, but he was saving the best for last. It was a nice 35lb. Yellowfin also landed on a cedar plug. This turned out to be the biggest tuna landed that day as most were all football size and smaller. After landing about 10 yellowfin, we decided to run 20 miles from our location to the shark buoys which were holding dorado. We proceeded to land 10 dorado between the three of us, mostly on sardines and strips of Yellowfin once we ran out of sardines. It was an awesome trip and I can't thank the crew Ramon and Josue enough for taking good care of us.

This week the tuna seemed to disappear early in the week. We did however see some nice dorado up to 45lbs. and some really nice Roosters up to 60lbs. Bart Whelan of Monterey, CA landed a very nice rooster while fishing with Mark Daugherty of East Cape Guides. His fishing partner Greg Whelan of Long Beach, CA also landed a nice (but smaller) rooster (see pictures below). Then like we have seen in weeks past, the end of the week came and the tuna came back. Boats were coming back in with limits on tuna, mostly football with some tuna up to 50lbs. We are still seeing some nice dorado, although most have been in the 10-20lb. range. The marlin bite has picked up bite this week as well, with some boats landing 2 or 3 in a day. Most haven't been too interested in the billfish because there has been plenty of Tuna, Dorado and Roosters around. Some of the other species landed this week include Jacks, trigger fish, pargo and bonita.

That's it for this week amigos! Until next week....

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 6/23/12

Hola Amigos,

It was quite a week in Los Barriles with 5 tournaments being held between Palmas De Cortez and Playa Del Sol.  The week started with the award ceremony for the 100th Fish With Me tournament.  Jerry Hall from Fish With Me in Washington celebrated his 100th group trip to the East Cape.  Jerry has been bringing group to the East Cape since 1984 two to four times per year.  This year at Playa Del Sol the Fish With Me tournament had 27 Anglers.  The group’s fish totals were as follows:

1 Blue, 28 Stripe Marlin, 8 Sail Fish, 46 Dorado, 8 Yellow Fin Tuna.  Congratulations to all the anglers and Jerry Hall for 100 great trips to the East Cape.

As soon as the Fish With Me group left Playa Del Sol, the 46th Annual Roosterfish tournament arrived at the hotel.  This year’s group came over from Punta Colorada because of the hotel being closed.  The group quickly adapted to their new surroundings and a great time was had by all.  I don’t have the final numbers but I do know that day two of the tournament was epic with several boats landing 10-20 roosters in one day.

By the time the Roosterfish Tournament reached day two, the Keep’n It Reel crew was invading Hotel Palmas De Cortez.  The annual Fish and Chips tournament which includes one day of fishing for the biggest dorado and tuna, one day of no limit Texas Holdem an the ever popular bikini contest.  Over 100 participants from all parts of the U.S. attended this year’s event.  Team Fresh Catch took the $4,000 prize for biggest Tuna along with over $3,000 in Jackpot money with a very nice 83# yellowfin.  Team El Loco I took down the Dorado category worth another $4,000 with a nice 24# dodo.  Saturday’s poker tournament lasted until 1:30am and Julian McCarthy of Ft. Lauderdale, FL out lasted more than 70 participants to take the Texas Holdem title.
The morning after the Texas Holdem game finished, the Tournament Anglers Association were gearing up for their first day of fishing out of Hotel Palmas De Cortez.  This three day fishing tournament organized by Bill Evans is a catch and release tournament.  Some anglers fish the Roosterfish Tournament and then move over to Palmas to fish the TAA tournament which always follows.  This year’s group of 25 anglers found some nice billfish, tuna and dorado during there three days of fishing.

Meanwhile over at Playa Del Sol, the Tuna Club was getting ready for their annual tuna tournament.  This year’s group of 48 participants couldn’t have timed it any better.  The tuna started to arrive just days before they checked in to Playa Del Sol.  Boats were coming in with anywhere from 5-15 tunas mostly football size.

As you can tell by this week’s report it was a busy time in Los Barriles.  We would like to thank everyone for a great time and especially those tournament organizers who spend so much time each year getting these events together.  We hope to see everyone back again next year.

That’s it for this week amigos!

Cass Tours Fishing Report 6/17/12

East Cape Rancho Leonero

Finally it looks like things are getting back to normal. The dirty green water has cleared dramatically. Water temps are around the high 70's low 80's with flat calm seas and balmy days. Boats have been able to range far and wide in search of porpoise. A few schools have been found and a few tuna picked off early in the morning, but not wide open action yet. Sardines remain scarce but we are getting good quality bigger bait in the form of caballitos, forelitos and mullet(lisa). Most captains have been jigging fresh bait through the day with Lucky Joes or Subiki rigs. If you are coming down soon it may be a good idea to bring some bait jigs.

The Marlin bite remains consistent. All anglers that so desire are able to take on a striper as is usual for this time of year. Fish mostly taken with the bigger live bait. The fish are spread all over the east cape fishing area.

About 20 miles straight out are some shark bouys which are loaded with schooling dorado. Some of these fish are extremely small but there are bigger fish around. We hosted the 'Let's Talk Hookup" tournament this week and the big dorado of the week was 52.5#. There were also a lot of 30's and 40's.

Roosterfish action can only be described as spectacular! 50# to 70# fish are the rule rather than the exception. Most of these giants have been taken in the area of the light house. The Forelitos have been the best bait. The fish are lurking in the deeper water sometimes quite far off shore . By hooking the bait through the back one is able to get the bait to swim down deep .This is an excellent opportunity to boat a trophy Rooster.

Some anglers have focused on bottom fishing this week and come away with some good sized Barred Pargo up to 18 #.

San Jose Del Cabo - Gordo Banks

With Los Cabos now hosting the G20 Summit for world leaders, we are seeing unprecedented security forces operating, with safety for everyone being the highest priority. Through this week we expect traveling delays, due to heavy traffic through road blocks and various closures. With this active military presence seen throughout the area, the weather patterns were almost as dynamic, cool Pacific air flows, gusty at times, swirling from all directions, high temperatures did reach 90 degrees over the weekend ,morning’s are still cool, actually very comfortable climate, just has not been what is needed to improve local ocean conditions. With the start of summer season a week away, marine moisture is all there has been, no rainfall in sight, but plenty of sunshine.

Anglers are being confronted with these unfavorable ocean conditions, not so much cooler temperatures, greatest factor being the high chlorophyll levels that is creating greenish brown waters that just do not attract the baitfish which in turn bring in the gamefish. On Terrafin SST charts, the green water was ranging to 40 miles offshore, even there it does not even appear blue. Inshore water temperatures are averaging 70 to 74 degrees, not too cool, just the dirty current has not been what we want to see. This same pattern persists to as far north of Punta Arena, where there is a water break up to 76/78 degrees. So water temperatures are okay, there needs to be a switch in currents, to sweep in cleaner conditions, so anglers can find what they came to expect. There was some encouraging reports of improved ocean conditions outside of San Luis Bank, where on Father’s Day local panga boats were participated in an annual event, winning fish was a 36 pound dorado, a 34 pound dorado was second. Now we have heard late notice talk that authorities will be closed the Puerto Los Cabos Marina Port on June 18 & 19, we have not even officially been notified and many charters are scheduled for these dates, anglers have purchased expensive plane tickets, prepaid for all inclusive packages, rented vehicles, gone shopping, spent lots of money, all planning to fish for a day or two even more, now at the very last hour we are supposed to notify that the Port is Closer, refund all payments and say that we are deeply sorry for this poor judgment and baseless decision. This event has been planned for a year, you think local business operators could have be notified of any closures far enough in advance to not disappoint visiting anglers, hopefully there can be reversal of thoughts, otherwise we are all looking at losing more disgruntling tourists.

Not many anglers appear to be in town now, perhaps more would be ready to go fishing if recent reports were more encouraging, ocean conditions have been tough and then having to deal with traffic delays, etc…I believe many people are just hanging out at their resorts and enjoying the isolated relaxation, there are definitely more political diplomats and their entourages than normal tourists.

Early in the week there were limited numbers of striped marlin and dorado found in the cleaner offshore waters, then currents switched again, pushed in browner colored waters and progressively slowed down the action. The best chance at finding action was closer to shore, anglers were slow trolling and drifting with baits such as caballito, mullet or moonfish. Early in the week there was a good bite for amberjack right directly off the PLC Marina rock jetty entrance, especially at first light, one local commercial pangero reported landing a 80 pound amberjack, most of the ambers landed were in the 20 to 50 pound range, fortunate boats had two, three or even four of these quality fish.

During the week the common species found were amberjack, jack crevalle, roosterfish, sierra, pargo and cabrilla. None of these were numerous, but some charters did account for decent catches of three ,four or five quality specimens. Roosterfish were congregating more around the jetty area due to higher presence of baitfish, not much bait activity along beach stretches now, as inshore conditions rebound we should see a big influx of mullet.

At this time we are being told by Port Officials that we can no longer fish in this jetty area, guess that was inevitable, being that these boats are fishing where boat traffic is heavy, though now there are more military boats than anything else. It would be nice if these patrol boats acknowledged the Marina’s no wake speed limits, these turbo jet PT patrol vessels create heavy wakes, damaging dock structure and have already been reasonable for many snapped dock lines.

Heavy commercial inshore gill net operations continue on both the Pacific side of CSL and north of SJDC. This is an incredibly destructive technique, though is very lucrative for the individuals involved, systematically and indiscriminately trapping any species that swims through this particular shallow zone, including pargo, snapper, roosterfish, cabrilla, parrot fish, pompano, amberjack, sierra and many others, often snagging turtles and even mammals. When this gear does breaks off, it is often encountered drifting with decomposing fish, while continuing to kill others. These fish camps do have legal permits, somewhere up higher in the political chain there has to be someone that realizes what damage this is doing to such a fragile ecosystem, which will not be able to sustain itself much longer at this rate of decimation. When reporting this situation to local officials, of course no one wants to get involved, this form of fishery needs to be abolished all together, there are alternative methods, this should not be political, we are talking about future resources for generations to come, it is discouraging to witness such negligence.

The combined panga fleet out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 68 charters for the week, with anglers reporting a fish count of: 6 striped marlin, 18 dorado, 12 bonito, 39 amberjack, 9 grouper, 19 cabrilla, 12 jack crevalle, 66 roosterfish, 6 pompano, 32 huachinango, 22 yellow snapper, 20 triggerfish, 10 sierra and 5 pargo colorado.

Cabo San Lucas Gaviota Fleet

Another week of very difficult fishing for the Cabo San Lucas sportfishing fleet and reports from the skippers on "limits of off-color and dirty water in all directions for at least 20 miles or so".  When one views the terrafin sea surface charters for the area surrounding Cabo San Lucas, it's easy to see why the fish aren't being cooperative or absent from the area.  While the sea temps are good from Cabo Falso and around to the Sea of Cortez side, the water clarity in most areas appears from off color brown to off color green and certainly not conducive to the normal clean, blue, waters of this area.  Lots of current changes and upwellings throughout the area are keeping the billfish catches at a minimum level and everyone is waiting for the improvement to the conditions.  Still, as poor as the water conditions are, the boats that did fish reflected a near 50% billfish catch rate that I found remarkable.  The overall catches for 13 days fished reflected 6 stripers released, 5 dorado and 3 Sierra for their efforts.

Cabo Climate:  Mostly sunny, warm and clear days with temps that ranged from 71 nights to 93 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions:  Cool waters on the Pacific side at 70-71 degrees and an almost constant 10-15 mph surface breezes, a medium swell condition and white caps.  Temps rise to 74-75 at Cabo Falso and continue to rise tto 77-79 above ad outside the Gorda Banks on the Sea of Cortez side.  All areas out to 20 miles or more are inundated with very poor water clarity conditions.

Best Fishing Area:  The boats are fishing in all areas from near to far and there is no concentration of fish in any given area at this time.

Best Lure/Bait:  None were specified in this report but I would venture that most of the billfish were likely taken on live bait that were visually seen on the surface, allowing for a casted presentation.
Bait Supply:  Caballitos were readily available for the anglers throughout the week.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 6/15/12

 Hola Amigos,

Well it was another great week down here on the East Cape. Based on the last three weeks, I am declaring Friday's to be "Tuna Fridays". For the last three weeks we have seen hardly any tuna if at all Saturday through Thursday. Then comes Friday and as if they know what day of the week it is, Yellowfin Tuna show up. Now I'll be honest and tell you that on Tuesday the cruiser "El Tio" got into a nice tuna bite and came home with 14 Tuna, the biggest weighing in at 132lbs. (see picture below). But it was not until today that any other boat came in with tuna. Today we had 10 boats return with some nice tuna on board. All were from football size to 70lbs. The tuna bite as been out about 25 miles from Pescadero. There seems to be a trend forming here..."Tuna Friday"

The Dorado so seem to care much about the days of the week. We are seeing boats coming back with 6-8 nice size dorado each day. I'm talking about 35-50 pounders on a consistent basis. The marlin bite seems to be making a turn around. It seemed that for the last few weeks guys have been seeing lots of billfish in the water, but they just haven't been hooking them. This week we started to see boats coming in with multiple billfish flags flying, were in previous weeks you might see 1 flag per boat. The roosters are also being landed quite frequently by those who are fishing inshore. Although the nice big roosters have been landed a few miles off show and with bigger bait like Lady Fish and small jacks. The hot spot seems to be from La Ribera down to Lighthouse point, then straight out a few miles off shore.

I mentioned in last weeks report that the Father, Sons and Friends annual tournament took place over the weekend. The award ceremony was held on Saturday after I submitted my report. I just wanted to let everyone know that the group raised $5,000 that went to a boarding school in La Ribera. The group's fishing totals were almost as impressive with a total of 15 Marlin (all released) and 125 Dorado with 10 being over 40 pounds and the biggest one was 52 pounds, caught by Stan Gollinger. A big thank you to everyone involved, especially Jack Richardson who organizes this great event each year. That's all for this week amigos! Next week is the KIR Fish and Chips tournament and bikini contest!

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 6/8/12

Hola Amigos,

First let me apologize for not reporting last week. Things were a little crazy for me last week and I completely forgot to post a report. This week was a week to remember for Dorado. We saw at least 5 dorado that weighed in at over 50 lbs., the biggest weighing 55lbs. We weighed more than 20 dorado over 40lbs. and 20 dorado over 30lbs. This week's pictures looked a lot like the pictures we took in last year dorado shoot out. Most of the dorado were taken to the north of Hotel Palmas De Cortez around the shark buoys.

We didn't see any tuna this week until today. The J&B, Miss Petunia and El Loco II found a school of porpoise to the north of the hotel today. The biggest tuna was landed by the J&B and weighed in at 65lbs. The other two tunas weighed in at 25lbs. and 30lbs. Both were landed on cedar plugs, while the 65lb. tuna was landed on live bait.

Jonathan and Jennifer Medrano landed a few nice roosters and dorado while on board the super panga "Siboney". Their prize catch was 3 roosters that were all over 50lbs. and the biggest dorado of the week weighing in at 55lbs. Jonathan and Jennifer also landed a few nice jacks, dorado and more than 20 roosters during their two week stay.

We also wanted to give a big thanks to the two groups that invaded Palmas De Cortez this week. The first to arrive on Wednesday was the annual Father, Son and Buddies tournament. Jack Richardson puts on a wonderful tournament every year which includes a clothes give away for all the hotel employees, a poker night, raffles and a fishing tournament. It is in my opinion the most organized tournament I've seen put on at Van Wormer Resorts. My hats off to Jack and his crew for putting on a great tournament. If you would like information on the Father Son and Buddies Tournament check there website at www.fathersonandbuddies.com.

The second group was the Baja Sportfishing Fraternity who came down for their 5 annual tournament. Dan Shaver puts on a great two day fishing tournament every year at Hotel Palmas De Cortez. One of the teams today landed a nice 52lb. dorado while fishing on the Billfighter.

That's it for this week amigos! Keep your eyes open for a great Father's Day promotion that will be offered next week and will expire on Father's Day.

Great Lost to the Saltwater Fishing World, Jose Wejebe Dies at 54

I just heard about Jose's passing and it rocked me to my core. I met him in 2005 at the Fred Hall Show and we talked tackle technology, lure design, etc. He struck me as a very technical angler, very much dedicated to new tackle technology and moving light tackle technical angling forward. If we all think back to the "old days" before braided lines, small high performance reels and butterfly jigs, they seem like the dark ages. As a guide and TV host, Jose took many of these new tackle technologies from Shimano, field tested them in South Florida and presented them to the world. My condolences go out to the Wejebe Family.

He was a true innovator, he elevated our sport and he will be missed.

Baja Fishing Report 5/7/12

Report by Cass Tours

San Jose Del Cabo - Gordo Banks

Light crowds of visitors now traveling to Southern Baja. Conditions are practically perfect, high temperatures in the mid 80s, warming air and ocean temperatures is creating more marina cloud cover, afternoon breezes make the spring climate very pleasant. Water temperatures were on a warming trend throughout this past week and at this time there is 76 degrees pushing in from outside of the Gordo Banks area. From Cab San Lucas to Los Frailes the inshore water is ranging from 72 to 74 degrees. Conditions and fishing action can change rapidly at this time of year.

Increasing ocean swells from the south made it difficult for pangeros to net any sardinas, so in recent days live sardinas were not available and anglers were using the larger caballito, which remained plentiful from the marina area. Though these baits are purchased per piece, not to be used freely for chumming with, such as with the sardinas. More bolito are now schooling on the fishing grounds and these are being caught early in the day for use as bait. Also at times pelagic red crabs have been surfacing, being netted and used for bait over the bottom structure.

Striped marlin action has dominated the offshore action for the past few months, but this past week we saw wide open action, as the numbers of marlin on the local grounds significantly increased, anglers were regularly accounting for multiple catches on striped marlin ranging to to 150 pounds. In recent days there has been a hot spot found between the Outer Gordo Bank and the 1150 high spot, ten to twelve miles offshore, but the stripers are being found throughout the region, at times within a couple miles of shore. The marlin are striking on a variety of trolled baits and artificial lures. Local panga fleets were reported incredible success while slow trolling with dead bolito, while caballito and skipack also worked, the billfish seemed to prefer the bolito, striking on the fresh dead bait without hesitation. Many double and even triple hook ups were reported, these marlin were encountered in concentrations. As skipjack and bolito schools increasingly congregate on the fishing grounds, this is now attracting larger concentrations of gamefish. Continued reports of mako and thresher sharks found on the same offshore fishing grounds and more dorado also appeared in the fish counts, no real numbers yet, just single fish being encountered, hooked on trolled lures or bait, the majority of the dorado have been of larger size, with a handful of impressive sized bulls up close to fifty pounds accounted for from the same marlin grounds. A few wahoo stories being talked about and we look for these elusive fish to become more active with the warming currents and their favored bolito food source appearing.

With the lack of sardinas and higher surf conditions, there was not much to report for inshore action, anglers had other options of fishing rocky structure areas, from 50 ft. to 200 ft. Anglers found mixed results on a wide variety of species, most common were yellow snapper, barred pargo, huachinango (red snapper), amberjack, cabrilla (leopard grouper) and triggerfish. On some days good early morning action was reported on yo-yo jigs and live caballito, many heavier fish were cutting lines off in the rocks. Red crabs were sporadically found on the surface and being used successfully for red snapper bait, even an occasional amberjack hit on these small crabs. Sea lions were also hanging around their favorite snapper grounds and were a negative factor to deal with. Bottom species become finicky when the grounds are plugged with red crabs and all of the fish acquire a preferred taste for these crabs and not much or anything else. With persistence and patience there were quality catches accoutered for, all excellent eating specimens and we certainly enjoyed the improved action.

The combined local panga fleets launching from La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 52 charters for the week, with anglers reported a fish count of: 86 striped marlin, 6 mako shark, 2 thresher shark, 23 dorado, 22 barred pargo, 86 yellow snapper, 4 yellowtail, 34 amberjack, 28 cabrilla, 14 pompano, 48 triggerfish, 42 sierra, 1 yellowfin tuna and 12 roosterfish.

East Cape - Rancho Leonero

Water- 77-78 warmer than normal. Clear flat water all week.
Air- Warmer with highs in the 80's. Cool evenings and mornings. a nice time of year on the E Cape..

The same good fishing as in the past week continues. It is hard to tell what's going on by our fish photo gallery. Both the Striped Marlin and Roosterfish are normally released so we have very few photos of either. That said, the Striped Marlin mixed with a few Sailfish are abundant and close. Anglers targeting bill fish are releasing at least one a day. Most are being taken within eye sight of the hotel. The billfish are very close inshore some within a 1/2 mile of the beach. Our shuttle Panga driver, Eddie, caught a Striper around our boat anchorage on Wednesday afternoon. The billfish are very close. There are a few big bull Dorado to 60#'s being taken daily, all on trolled marlin lures. The Roosterfish bite is very strong with lots of Gallo's around. The Roosterfish are bigger this week with some 40 to 50# er's released. Inshore has been good with lots of Pompano and Pargo taking Sardine. The water is warming fast, we will have 80 degree water within the next two weeks, very early.

Bill fish- Very close, best between the hotel and Punta Arena (the lighthouse). All within five miles of shore. Mostly Stripers with a few Sails mixed in. Skirted Bally Hoo and live Caballito are working best. Trolled Squid colors working as well. The fish are between 150 and 200#'s.

Roosterfish- It looks like another big year for Gallos. More fish around than last week, and much larger. 50# er's are becoming common. The warmer than normal water is bringing the big guys in early. Very good fishing for Roosters..

Inside- Pompano and Pargo are both biting. Very strong predictable Pompano fishing this whole spring. Since the hotel has opened they have been producing limits of ten pound fish for all anglers targeting them. Some good size Pargo this week, a number of 10 to 15#ers are coming to the cleaning table daily..

Cabo San Lucas - Gaviota Fleet

According to Fish Cabo Fleet Owner, Roberto Marquez, the marlin were scattered all over and extended from out front of the Finistera Hotel and easterly, into the Sea of Cortez, with the primary hot spot from the 95 Fathom Spot to the 1150 Fathom Spot.  Roberto said, "The fish are beginning to bite much better and the hot bait was the slow-trolled ballyhoo baits, just like in the old days.  While they were still eating the live baits, both the caballitos and the mackerel, it seemed the ballyhoo was the right way to go for many of the boats."  It had started out slow in the early part of the week but picked up as the week progressed and with any luck at all, it will just keep getting better and better.  Many boats were reporting multiple fish days and that was a dramatic turn-around from the prior two weeks.  The overall combined fish counts for a total of 12 days fished offshore reflected 13 stripers, (12 released) and 3 dorado.  There was a single inshore fishing day that produced 10 Sierra and 1 yellowtail.

Cabo Climate:  It went from cloudy and cool days in the early part of the week to sunny & warm days as the week progressed and the upward temp changed to 68 nights and 94 daytime highs.  Very pleasant weather, now.

Sea Conditions:  5-15 mph westerly surface breezes keeping the Pacific waters cool at 65-66 degrees and is pushing up against the warmer, Sea of Cortez currents, starting outside Cabo, at 71-72 degrees.  Temps increase as we move easterly into the Sea of Cortez to 74-77.  Green water on the Pacific side from shore to the 1000 fathom curve, becoming clean green by Cabo and bluing up as one moves easterly into the Sea of Cortez, out to the 1150 fathom spot and beyond.

Best Fishing Area:  While billfish were being spotted almost everywhere, the best bite for the week was at the 95 Fathom Spot and on to the 1150 Fathom Spot.

Best Bait/Lures:  The hot bite bait for the week has been ballyhoo, slow-trolled from the outriggers.  Alternate baits that worked pretty good were the caballitos and mackerel and the artificials were the least effective.

Bait Supply:  The live bait supply was good and consisted of caballitos and some green mackerel.  When the bait boats had the ballyhoo available, ($3-$4.00 each) they went fast.  Roberto told me this morning that the ballyhoo are coming from the La paz area and not always available.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 5/4/12

Hola Amigos...The fishing continues to be very good down here on the East Cape. 8 to 12 boats per day have been going out and everyone seems to be catching plenty of fish. The fishing this week was almost a carbon copy of last week. Guests are getting plenty of shots at striped Marlin. Some boats are landing up to 6 in a day and seeing over a dozen per day. Some boats are reporting that the marlin are very finicky and appear to not be very hungry. Even so, those who don't get discouraged have been able to land some nice billfish.

The Dorado bite continues to be hot. Once again it wasn't the number of fish landed but the size of the ones that were landed. As you can see by the pictures which were taken earlier in the week, there are some nice size Dorado down here right now. We also saw the first Yellowfin tuna of the season, which landed by the cruiser J&B. The tuna weighed only 3lbs., but it's a sign that they are out there. The roosters were once again being landed in bunches, although not as many as last week. This may be because not as many people were targeting them. We are still seeing some nice Jacks in the area, Jack Cravalle and Skip Jacks were both landed by guests this week. Some of the other species we saw this week included Cabrilla, Pargo, Lady Fish, Pompano, and Mako shark. The water temperatures continue to hold steady at 74 to 76 degrees. The air temperature has been in the low to mid 80's, but we are seeing more mid 80's and it does feel like it is getting warmer each week. That is until today when the sky turned grey and we had some late afternoon thunder and lightning. This is only supposed to last until Sunday and then it will be back to warm sunshine. That's it for this week my friends. Until next week!

2000 Pound Great White Shark in Sea of Cortez

A great white shark measuring nearly 20 feet and weighing 2,000 pounds -- according to a  local report -- was hauled up Sunday by commercial fishermen in the Sea of Cortez near Guaymas. The massive predator was dead when it was brought to the surface in a net deployed by fishermen named Guadalupe and Baltazar, who were treated to the surprise of a lifetime when they saw what they had captured."We were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge, dead, great white shark, and then we thought what are we going to do?," Guadalupe told Pisces Sportfishing, which is located in the resort city of Cabo San Lucas. There is some dispute about the size If, in fact, it measured six meters (19.8 feet), as Milenio News reported, it'd be one of the longest white sharks ever recorded.

The fishermen, who were aboard a 22-foot skiff, towed the behemoth two miles to the beach, where dozens of people helped drag it onto dry sand."Guadalupe and Baltazar swore they had never seen a fish this big before in their lives," the Pisces blog stated. "Even though on March 13 of this year, some of their fellow fishermen had also caught a great white, which had weighed 990 pounds."Adult white sharks were once believed to be rare in the Sea of Cortez, or Gulf of California, but scientists now believe parts of the gulf serve as a nursery for the species.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 4/20/12

by Eddie Dalmau, Van Wormer Resorts

As visitors begin to arrive to the East Cape and more and more boats seem to be leaving the dock each morning, the Van Wormer Resorts are beginning to come to life once again. After much anticipation, the fishing season is upon us and we are off to a very nice start. After a few weeks of what many are calling the best yellow tail bite in 20 years, the talk now has centered on the large concentration of striped marlin in the area. Many guests are reporting seeing up to 15 striped marlin in one day and landing anywhere from 1-4 per day. We are also seeing the beginnings of what we hope is going to be a dorado season to remember. This week we say boats coming in with 1-6 dorado per boat from 10lbs. up to 35lbs. And the best part about it is that there is good fishing about 7 miles from the hotel. This week we also saw quite a bit more pargo come to the dock as well as cabrilla, roosters, pompano and jacks. There were also a few yellowtail, lady fish and sailfish that were landed. We saw a big temperature change in the water this week of about 5 degrees warmer than last week. Today the water temperatures reached 75 degrees. Our day time highs have been in the low 80's with an over night low in the mid 60's. We are looking forward to a great fishing season, so we hope to see many of you down here this year.

In this weeks photo: Eric Grissom of Southern California fishing today on the super panga "Siboney" landed 3 dorado, 3 pargo, and 2 cabrilla.

Until next week!

Cass Tours Fish Report Ending 4/16/12

Report by Cass Tours

EAST CAPE
Water- Mixed from 68 to 78..Warmer south. Mostly flat one windy but fishable day this week.

Air- As usual, very nice spring weather, with highs in the low 80's..

Another so so transitional week. Lots of Striped Marlin on the outside banks. Very picker biters, some boats baiting as many as ten fish without a take. Anglers chance of releasing a billfish about 50/50 again this week. A few big bulls to 40#'s taken this week all on trolled lures. Inside has been good with smaller to medium sized Roosterfish very active. Limits of Pompano in the five to ten pound range for all anglers. Some nice Pargo taken to 25#'s this week. Very mixed water for the last couple of days, a full ten degree difference between the water north and warmer water south.

Billfish- Loads of Stripers. Very, very picky biters. Anglers targeting billfish are seeing and baiting dozens of fish, with very little luck. They seem to have no interest in trolled lures. All taken on live Mackerel or trolled Bally Hoo. Off all the drop-offs from La Ribera to Frailles.

Dorado- Big fish but not very many. The occasional bull taken on trolled marlin lures..In the same areas as the billfish. All fish around 30 to 45#'s..

Inside- Wide open quality Pompano fishing. Lots of Gallo's to ten pounds. The Pargo bite has picked up.

CABO SAN LUCAS
I talked with Roberto Marquez, the Fish Cabo Fleet owner this morning, and he said there was plenty of billfish action but the fish just wouldn't stay hooked. Yesterday, the "Fish Cabo" got luck and released 1 striped marlin following 12 billfish strikes for the day. They just couldn't get the fish to stick and this was not an isolated incident. It was happening throughout the fleet. They tried slow trolling live baits with no luck at all then switched to live bait drop backs and again, with no luck at all. The billfish just would't cooperate. The same report was coming in from all of the various Cabo sportfishers and was another one of those frustrating fishing days. On the bright side was the numbers of billfish being seen by the boat crews and anglers and it will turn around. Just a matter of time. Our combined fishing report for a total of 28 days fished reflected 8 stripers released, 2 mako sharks, 2 dorado, 2 jack crevalle, 17 skipjack tuna, 17 Sierra and 6 yellowtail.

Cabo Climate: Just terrific weather with warm, sunny days and pleasant evenings and temps that ranged from 58 nights to 82 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Mostly cooler waters on the Pacific side with temps at 67-68 on the Golden Gate & Jaime Banks. Just inside the banks and closer tto shore the water temps fall to 61-62 and extend down to Cabo Falso and stretching out across the 1000 fathom curve. Water temps rise dramatically to 75 degrees from Palmilla Point, out across the 1150, beyond the Cabrillo Seamount and northeasterly across the Gorda Banks and on to Las Frailes.

Best Fishing Area: The billfish are building in numbers in the Gorda Banks area and while not too eager to stay on the hook, plenty willing to bite at the artificials.

Best Lure/Bait: Billfish are very eager to strike at the lures but continue to be "short biters" and not staying hooked.

Live Bait Supply: Remained very good, even through the full moon phase, with a mix of mackerel and caballitos.

SAN JOSE DEL CABO - GORDO BANKS
As the extended spring break comes to an end, crowds of tourists are now lighter. The weather is practically perfect, clear sunny skies with highs in the low 80s. There was still some unpredictable winds coming from various directions, but for the most part anglers found ocean conditions to be pleasant. Water temperatures are now ranging up to about 72 degrees offshore of San Jose del Cabo and towards Los Frailes, much cooler currents are found in the direction of the Pacific.

Charters found a mix of caballito and sardinas for bait, though in recent days the supplies of sardinas became very scattered from Palmilla to Chileno where they had been so plentiful and now the bait netters will need to search out new sources, perhaps in the direction of Vinorama once again.

Clarity of the water has improved to the north of Punta Gorda, there were good numbers of striped marlin encountered from the Gordo Banks to Desteladera, most charters targeting the billfish were having multiple opportunities while trolling lures and casting baits to tailers and feeding stripers. A handful of dorado were also found on the same fishing grounds, some of them up to 30 pounds, most of the time just single fish.

Not much being heard about yellowfin tuna, there were occasional sightings of tuna on the Iman Bank, but only a few of these fish were actually hooked into, the yellowfin would vanish as quickly as they appeared. Last weekend there was one 120 pound tuna reported by a panga from La Playita, several other fish over 40 pounds as well. It is now the time when we should start seeing more tuna action associated with traveling porpoise.

There were a few wahoo to report in recent days, strikes on baits and lures on the fishing grounds from La Fortuna to San Luis, smaller sized fish up to 20 pounds, but nevertheless an encouraging sign. Surprisingly there were still many whales being sighted in the area, this is the tail end of season, most are headed north now.

Along the shoreline anglers are finding sierra, roosterfish and jack crevalle, as well as some yellowtail. Most of the roosterfish are in the 5 to 12 pound class, fun fighters on light tackle. Please remember that these fish should be released to mature and provide future stock, many anglers are not aware of this and many of the local skippers just do not seem to think about the future much.

Palmilla Point saw increased action for yellowtail, fish ranging up to 30 pounds, still no huge numbers, but more productive than it had been, drifting live caballitos down deep was most successful, though some anglers also had strikes on yo-yo’s. Towards Cabo San Lucas there were areas where anglers reported good action on the yellows while trolling deep diving Rapalas. It appears the bottom action is improving, more larger fish showing up, there were some amberjack starting to bite, one 80 pound fish was taken mid week and others in the 30 to 60 pound range, again no big numbers, but at least they are starting to appear in the counts. These amberjack were mainly taken while working yo-yo jigs off the structure. Various snapper, pargo, cabrilla and grouper rounded out the action off the bottom.

The combined panga fleets launching from La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 64 charters this past week, with anglers reporting a fish count of:

4 wahoo, 6 yellowfin tuna, 26 dorado, 16 shark, 18 striped marlin, 18 bonito, 16 amberjack, 24 yellowtail, 11 pompano, 58 pargo, 84 roosterfish, 33 cabrilla, 12 grouper and 185 sierra.
