Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 5/24/13

Hola Amigos,

Fishing continues to improve and a daily basis down on the East Cape. From where we were two weeks ago to where we are today, it’s like being in two different parts of the world. The striped marlin are starting to come in very thick. We started to see boats coming to the dock with 4-7 billfish released each. We started to see more Sails this week as well which really added to the billfish numbers. This week the number of dorado also increased with the biggest dorado landed by angler Mike McCourt from Malvin Michigan on board the Billfighter with Captain David Almanza.

We are still seeing really good fishing down by Los Frailes and La Ribera, but the north side really opened up this week as well for Jacks, billfish and roosters. The jack crevalle have been in close to shore near the hotel. We are also seeing many of them north of the hotels in about 100 feet of water. A few nice wahoo were landed this week as well with the largest coming this weekend weighing in at 63lbs. Today a smaller wahoo was landed by La Migra just south of Cerralvo Island weighing in at 30lbs. (photo attached). William Corey of Lynnwood Washington landed an released 5 billfish today while fishing on the Maria II. We also had a few nice pargo, cabrilla and pompano landed this week. Air temps are still in the upper 80’s to low 90’s and water temps have been approaching 80, but we are not there yet. Once again, so much for the new moon theory. Much better fishing during the full moon this month.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 5/10/13

Hola Amigos,

This week down at Van Wormer Resorts was a little slow by our standards. Actually it was as slow as I have seen it this year. We are starting to see more species of fish, but we are not seeing them in great numbers. The dorado have all but disappeared, with only a few coming in the entire week. The Striped Marlin bit has also slowed down quite a bit, but we are still seeing quite a few being landed. The dorado and marlin bite has been to the south of La Ribera. Roosters are being landed in big numbers, but not too much size to speak of. Most are small to medium roosters with only one over 30lbs. Roosters were landed to the north and south. This week we saw some nice Sierra landed, with the biggest weighing 23lbs. We also saw some small to medium pargo, pompano and cabrilla landed this week. Most of that action was to the north of Punta Pescadero. It was tough fishing for our guests here this week, but we hope that it turns around for everyone coming in next week.

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 5/3/13

Hola Amigos

The fishing has definitely picked up this last week.  We are starting to see much more activity from the striped marlin.  Guests have had shots and landed quite a few this past weeks.  Many anglers were lucky enough to land multiple marlins in the same day.  We are also seeing the dorado size increase.  A few weeks ago we saw a few dorado come in in the 20-30 lbs. range.  This week we saw more and even a few in the 40lb. class.  Most of the dorado have been caught down south near Los Frailes.   Inshore we are seeing lots of roosters to the north of Palmas De Cortez, with the boat Rosa landing 20 in one day.  We also saw a few wahoo this week with one lucky angler landing a nice 60lb. wahoo down south near Los Frailes while fishing on the El Loco II.  We have also seen quite a few Mako Sharks this month.   The weather is definitely warming with day time highs in the upper 80’s and lows in the upper 60’s.  Water temps have been a little cold at around 76 degrees, but we are seeing a warming trend.  It’s another great start to what we hope to be a great season.  That’s it for this week.
