Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 5/27/11

by Eddie Dalmau, Van Wormer Resorts

Captain Jesus and mate Francisco of the Tres Amigos with a happy angler
As the East Cape heats up in both air temperature and fishing, two things are on peoples mind. The first is cold beer and the second is Big Tuna, and right now in the East Cape we have both. The fishing continued to be up and down this week, really good some days and so so on others, but there is no doubt there are lots of fish in the area. On Tuesday a guest fishing out of Hotel Palmas De Cortez land a 230lb. Yellowfin Tuna, the biggest by far of this season. Then on Wednesday a guest fishing out of Playa Del Sol landed 3 nice tuna ranging from 80lbs. to 130lbs. As if that wasn’t enough, on Thursday another guest out of Playa Del Sol landed a 187lb. tuna. Not to mention countless other boats that landed tuna in the 50-100 pound range. Most of the Tuna being landed are to the north 20 miles off of Punta Pescadero. The big tuna have arrived in May and it is not a fluke. I still have a picture hanging in my office of the first big tuna caught last year on May 28th weighing 187lbs. I also remember that they got bigger and bigger each week until we peaked in July with a 260lb. tuna. Other than big tuna, the other big story down here has been the Blue Marlin that was landed at Hotel Punta Colorada. The Blue Marlin weighed in at an impressive 500lbs. and was caught out of a Super Panga near La Ribera. This was only the second Blue Marlin that I’d had heard about this season, but they are out there. We also saw quite a few Striped Marlin, Dorado up to 40+lbs., Pargo and Cabrilla are still being caught in the Bay of Palms as well as Lady Fish, Jacks and Roosters. That’s it for this week my friends.

See you in the East Cape soon!

VAN WORMER RESORTS FISHING REPORT 5/13/10

by Eddie Dalmau, Van Wormer Resorts

Who said Friday the 13th is unlucky!

The week started very much like last week, some windy days and not a whole lot of fish coming in.  It was a tough grind for most anglers this week as the north winds blew a couple of days and the fishing was not quite up to East Cape standards.  The reports were that the Marlin had moved out and no one seemed to be able to locate the Dorado.  Many anglers decided to try inshore and bottom fishing.  Those that did were rewarded with Roosters, Pompano, Pargo, Cabrilla, and Jacks.  One guest out of Hotel Playa Del Sol landed 10 roosters on Thursday.  Then came Friday the 13th

The morning started with a little breeze, but not enough to keep anglers off the water.  Soon after the boats made their way to their favorite fishing holes, the radio chatter started throughout the fleet.  “MARLIN EVERYWHERE!”  “We are into a big school of Dorado…woohoo”!  All of a sudden things turned around.  Marlin were spotted and the schools of Dorado had once again been found.  It was quite a day!  Today we saw dorado up to 30lbs., as well as lot of striped marlin, Mako and thresher shark, roosters, pargo, cabrilla, pompano, and jacks.  It looks like fishing in the East Cape is off and running!

That is all for this week my friends.  Until next week!
