Hola Amigos….Another great week for tuna fishing in the East Cape. The biggest tuna this week was landed by Ryan Alsop on the El Loco II on Saturday. Ryan landed a very nice 200lb. Yellowfin. Ryan commented about his tuna on last weeks fishing report, but keep in mind that the fishing report is done on Friday and that any fish caught on Saturday are included on the following week’s report. Along with the 200 pounder, we saw lots of tuna in the 50-70 pound range, with many football size tuna as well. Even though the tuna bite continued to be the big story in the East Cape, the bigger news this week was the return of the dorado. We haven’t been seeing the number of dorado that we have grown accustomed to in the East Cape for a few weeks and this week we started to see that turn around. Several of our clients came in with dorado in the 10-20 pound range. The biggest reported was landed by the super panga Siboney which weighed in a nice 40lb. dorado this week. Hopefully the trend will continue and the dorado number will continue to grow. Not too many billfish were landed this week, but it wasn’t because they weren’t out there. With so many tuna and the arrival of the dorado schools, many just were not interested in fishing for billfish, although many were spotted. The Julkate did land a nice 350lb. blue marlin this week, but that was about the biggest news as far as billfish go. The Rooster bite remained solid this week, with some nice 20-35 pounders landed. We also saw some nice pargo this week, with the Champagne landing the biggest at close to 80lbs. The air temperature continues to range for a high in the upper 80’s to low 90’s and an overnight low in the upper 70’s. Water temperatures are holding steady in the mid 80’s. East Cape Guides Fishing Report 9/4/2011

Water- 87-88 The water is is little cooler than in the last month. Flat mornings and afternoon easterly breezes out of the East.

Air- Cooler this week. A couple of afternoon rain showers and a cool easterly wind every afternoon has made for very pleasant much cooler days.

Very good fishing this week. Lots of tuna with nearly all anglers limiting, a strong but largely ignored bill fish bite, the best Dorado fishing of the year, and as usual great inshore fishing with lots of big Roosters released. The hotel was only sending out two or three boats a day Monday through Thursday, on Friday and Saturday over ten. All boats very late start for Dorado, some nice fish mixed with the tuna taken this week. Lots of Sailfish, Stripers adnd Blues around. Very light pressure, boats trolling on their return from the tuna grounds outside are having luck.

Yellowfin- From 15 to 40 miles off, due North. average fish are between 20 and 45#,s. Free swimmers are closer inside, outside the tuna are under Porpoise. Lots and lots of tuna round, almost all anglers limiting. Cedar plugs have been very effective. Some very big fish in the 300# class are taking Marlin lures.

Dorado- Best week of the year. Not wide open, but more taken this week than all this year. Mixed with tuna and very spread. Live sardine working best. Average fish around 10#'s largest 35..

Billfish- Very spread. Lots around, very light pressure. Most taken on the troll returning from the tuna grounds. An even mix of Sails and Stripers. One or two Blues were released this week.

Inside- Big Gallos again this week. 50 to 60#ers are being released daily. Lots of big Pompano..A decent Pargo bite..

Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 8/19/11

As water temperatures continue to fluctuate between 85-90 degrees throughout the East Cape, Yellowfin Tuna continues to thrive under these conditions. We have seen a steady stream of Yellowfin this week arriving at the docks throughout the East Cape. Sunday, our own Chucky Van Wormer landed a 168lb. Yellowfin while fishing aboard the El Loco II with Captain Julio Cota. Mr. Van Wormer was filming a television show for a local television network. Should be the makings of a great show. Although it was the biggest tuna this week, it was only the beginning of the steady number of tuna this week. Many boats landed limits on Yellowfin ranging from 10-50lbs. We saw maybe 15 Tuna in the 50-100lbs. range and 1 over 150lbs. The tuna bite seems to be between Los Frailes and La Ribera. The water temperatures are also ideal for Blue Marlin and Sailfish. This week we saw good numbers of both species. The dorado numbers fell a little this week, mostly because of the great tuna bite. We are still seeing some nice size roosters close to shore between La Ribera and Lighthouse point. Some of the other species landed this week include Pargo, Jack Cravalle, Amber Jack, Skip Jacks, Cabrilla and Wahoo.

 

And wouldn’t you know it, right before I emailed this fishing report off to everyone, word came in that a monster tuna was landed out of Palmas De Cortez. Jason Hawk from Atlanta Georgia landed a 343lb. Yellowfin Tuna just about 2 hours ago. Jason was fishing on the cruiser “Mahitini” out of hotel Palmas De Cortez with Captain Oscar Verdugo Jr. and deckhand Nestor Crespo. The giant Yellowfin fought for more than 2 ½ before making its way onto the boat. The crew hooked the tuna on a green/black “Mean Joe Green” marlin lure just 15 miles in front of Punta Pescadero. Jason was the group organizer of this first time group to Palmas De Cortez that called themselves “Buds and Suds”. Congratulations!

Chucky Van Wormer lands this monster 168lb. Yellowfin Tuna 7 miles in front of Hotel Punta Colorada. Chucky was fishing on the El Loco II with Captain Julio Cota and Deckhand Abram. "We hooked it on a Caballito with 40# line and it took over 2 hours to bring the beast to the boat" said Chucky, who was filming a television show at the time.

East Cape Guides Report 8/7/11

The Ostenberg Family with a 140lb. yellowfin tuna

The last week has been pretty good across the border. The water is really heating up with reports of up to 92 degree water south of Frailes. When the wind allows, we've been running out to find the spotted dolphin and the tuna have been under them 99% of the time. Tuna ranging from 40 to 150# are aggressively coming up on chummed sardinas, but cedars and feathers have been hit or miss. The dorado bite went wide open today in front of La Ribera, all under 10#, with a few being taken on the troll up to 40#. The blue marlin bite has been very consistent over the last month with one or two being taken daily. Other billfish include sailfish showing up in the last week with the warm water. One or two are being hooked daily per boat. Striped marlin have moved out with very few being landed lately. A few roosters to 50# here and there near Frailes, small ones in front of Punta Colorada and La Ribera. Some pargo, cabrilla and anberjack are still being taken on jigs in front of La Ribera.
